Rowanhardt 3D practice by ChillySunDance Rowanhardt 3D practice by ChillySunDance
I'm learning 3D modelling! This was done in Blender and is a result of several tutorials worth of study. He's not quite finished yet, as I still need to add rigging to the tail and ears (I want to try to apply some physics to his tail) but it's very cool to know that I can get this kind of effect with relatively simple polygons and textures.

Still need to make his accessories too.

For anyone interested in learning blender, this is the tutorial that really got me started. cgi.tutsplus.com/tutorials/cre…

I'll probably replace this screenshot with a better picture later when I can render a background to go with the character.

My god you've moved to 3D, nothing can stop you now!

On a related note, this is a pretty perfect translation of your style.

I hear that if you really want to get into 3D, Autodesk Maya is the best program to use, but I'm not sure, because I've never tested it; it's not exactly free...

Like the shadowing effects! did you have to put special settings to get it cell shaded?

yep. It's got a very slight cel shading effect on it and two light sources. It took a bit of fiddling to get it looking the way I wanted but overall it's pretty basic.

Heh, he looks quite devious.  I've been catching up with all his past adventures, and I've become really enamored with his character.  ^_^

Ah my goodness, it must be an amazing feeling to see one of your own characters pop out and move around like that! You should try seeing if there is a 3d printer service that could use that and give you a little Ro action figure. Heh wouldn't that be something! :D (Big Grin)

It must be quite touching to see your character in 3D! =D

I had no idea how to use blender about a week ago. I definitely recommend taking a look at that ninja tutorial I posted in the comments if you want to learn how to model a low-poly character and texture them.

And yeah, the first time I was able to pose him with the rig, I was sort of spellbound! It's a really cool feeling.

Amazing Sundance! <33
May I ask was there a tutorial on how to color 3d model like the one that helped you out? I tried several before and I was confused. ;v;

The second half of the ninja tutorial teaches you how to bake a UV skin and then colour it before using it as a texture on your model. I just took it a step further by using my own painted textures with the same process.  It's really easy once you get the hang of it!

why does this kind of remind me of Okami? maybe i've been playing that game too much lately

but seriously Rowanhardt looks like he's in his own RPG style game, that's awesome!

Okami was a big inspiration for wanting to get started on 3D modeling actually! I realized that the models in Okami are actually very simple and most of the beauty came from the textures. It made me really want to try and see if I could imitate my art style with a 3D model.

League of Legend's recent art direction (particularly the upcoming remake of the game map) also served as an inspiration, as I'd read in an article that they reduced the polygon count of the new map even though it looks so much nicer. It's all in the textures!
