“Just break the dang thing already!” a youthful, brash voice called out from below, nearly breaking their concentration. Chelle looked down to see the young Floatzel, Cassidy, staring back up at her. He appeared as frustrated as he sounded. It was to be expected that someone wouldn’t agree with more peaceful methods, and perhaps even moreso expected to be him. Chelle was prepared to argue her stance with the Explorer when she was suddenly interrupted. A small, somewhat bothersome figure buzzed in around her head at initially high speed. Immediately recognizing it, Chelle simply looked forward and sighed, not even having her concentration broken.

“Ah, it’s no longer moving! I see I’ve arrived just in time!” the smaller figure praised itself in a haughty tone, slowing down enough that others could identify him to be an Inkay. Proudly, he puffed out what could technically be called his chest. A wave of energy not unlike Sol and Chelle’s emanated from him toward the statue, and in that moment, something finally happened. Its eyes all lit up and seemed to flash all sorts of colors before they all became blue, which had never occurred while it was trying to crush and shoot them.

“It’s docile now…” Chelle noted, quite confident in this. Despite the fact that this was a boon, Chelle stared at the Inkay, unimpressed. “Archimedes, you finished our research before this happened, didn’t you?” she calmly accused, calling him out. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d done such a thing.

“I-I-I had to… test it! Yes, tests. I could not simply accept the knowledge without extensive testing!” Archimedes nervously explained himself. His proof came in the form of several papers he carried with him, full of hastily-scrawled notes and diagrams. “It just so happened that I concluded them right as you activated the jamming device. It is fortunate that I was able to save the day before it re-activated itself, is it not?”

“I tire of your attempts to explain why you were being a coward! Everyone else put their lives on the line while you were hiding and pretending to work!” Chelle scolded, momentarily frightening the Inkay. For some reason, it was easier for her to get fed-up with Archimedes compared to… well, anyone else. Perhaps his demeanor just rubbed her the wrong way. She held her breath for a few moments to calm herself back down, exhaled, then continued glaring at Archimedes. “At least you did show up, I suppose.”

What a bunch of nonsense. Why preserve a statue that tried to kill everyone? The young Floatzel had half a mind to kick the stupid thing out of anger, but he thought better of it. No sense in hurting his own foot, no matter how upset he was. Instead, he crossed his arms and looked down in intense thought… which really just looked a lot like pouting.

“Hey little buddy,” a deeper voice came from behind Cassidy. “I dunno what they’re goin’ on about any more than you. How ‘bout we ask?”

Cassidy turned to glance at the Swampert behind him, still quite perturbed. How could Luke even think of believing this junk? Cassidy shot back, “All I know is they’re wastin’ valuable time we could be usin’ to smash this thing before it smashes us. If you wanna ask ‘em so much, then you do it!”

“Cassidy, y’know we had the whole city shooting at the thing, and it looks like all we did was give it a polish. Maybe we should give ‘em a chance,” Luke explained.

Luke’s reasoning didn’t always click with Cassidy. Sometimes he came off as a bit too trusting. Still, in this particular case, he was making some sense. The Floatzel was still stubborn in his feelings, though. “There’s gotta be a way we can just turn the whole thing into gravel, or somethin’...”

While he was thinking, Cassidy was startled by Luke suddenly yelling behind him, “Hey! What’s all this s’posed to do?!”

Before Cassidy could turn and scold Luke for taking him so literally, the three Researcher leaders had approached them. So, instead of turning, the Floatzel simply scoffed and continued looking away.

Chelle was the one to attempt to explain. “I’m glad you asked. Our research has told us that this creature has been sentient for some time, and it--”

“-- My research uncovered that it has been alive since ancient times, and it is very, very smart!” Archimedes interrupted, cutting short Chelle’s version of the explanation. “We could have learned so much from it if it had awakened peacefully! Fortunately, our efforts today may have turned things back in our favor. Oh, think of the things we could learn from it if it weren’t trying to kill us!”

    “Archimedes.”

Chelle’s voice was stern, and once again struck the Inkay with fear. “Y-yes?” he answered sheepishly.

“If you interrupt me again, I am going to make you the test subject for our newer recruits.”

That threat was all that was needed for Archimedes to slink away in quiet concern, leaving Chelle and Sol to speak for themselves.

Aside from being witness to a potential punishment, Cassidy had been swayed somewhat, but not entirely. He turned his head, but not his body, just enough to glance at the two remaining Researchers. “So yer sayin’ this thing isn’t bad? Why’d it attack us, then?”

“We don’t know,” Sol replied with no pride in her voice. The three words Researchers sometimes have to use, but never like to use. “We hope that, if we can awaken it peacefully, we can ask it ourselves.”

“Hmph,” Cassidy scoffed. “My brother’s convinced that the thing’s not bad too. It all sounds like a nice story, but we ain’t in a good position if it gets up and decides to hammer us like a bunch of little nails.”

I know this has been up for more than a month, but I just have to say

I freaking love Archimedes. He's amazing.

Carry on.
